Towering Bon Fire Tutorial |
In this tutorial I'll show you how to make a great-looking bon fire-type tower of flames in just a few steps. This is done using Adobe Photoshop 6.0, and a basic understanding of filters and tools is assumed.
The first thing to do is open a new layer (the example for this tutorial is size 250x250). Fill your first layer with black, then make a new layer on top of that one. All other steps are done on the second layer, not on the layer filled with black.
Setting your foreground color on an orange, use your airbrush (I used a soft brush, 27, with pressure on 15%), and make a shape like the one on the left, over lapping here and there so it's not too transparent. |
Next, use your dodge tool on the same color, set on "highlights." I used one of the smaller soft brushes for this. Imitate the shape, but don't go as far on the edges. Throw in a few more horizontal lines, too. |
Go to Filter > Distort > Wave. I used the settings displayed on the left, but depending on the size and shape that you're using, you might want to see what you think looks best. |
This time go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. You can see the settings I used on the left. You'll definitely want to set the angle at 90. As far as how much you want your distance to be should just depend on how much it takes to look realistic. Too much and you'll start to lose your pretty highlights! |
And ta-da! In just a few steps you can make a simple tower of fire. Try experimenting with blues or purples if you're looking for some enchanted fire. ^_^
