Gas Planet Tutorial |
Ever wanted your very own gas giant? Here's your chance! Using common tools and filters this tutorial will show you how to make your own gas planet. This is done using Adobe Photoshop 6.0, and a basic understanding of filters and tools is assumed.
First, open a new document (my example is 250x250)- square will work easiest. I'm using a black background, but the planet itself is on its own layer. With your circular marquee tool, select a circle (using shift makes it perfect). |
Choose a color, and using your Airbrush, with the Mode on Multiply, Pressure at about 18%, start making horizontal strokes, side to side. Throw in different shades. I find that using just a touch of white and black also makes it look nice. Keep doing this until you get a look you like. |
With your circle still selected, go to Filter > Distort > Spherize. Leave the setting on 100%. This will make our planet spherical. |
Now, with your circle still selected, go to Filter > Render > Light Effects. The settings I used here on shown on the left. Using the default settings, with a round light works pretty well. |
And that's all there is to it! Try adding some stars to the background, create your own little pixelated solar system.
