Circle of Light Tutorial

In this tutorial I'll show you how to make a useful halo-like effect for your graphic needs, and how to show the halo surrounding another object. This is done using Adobe Photoshop 6.0, and a basic understanding of filters and tools is assumed.

The first thing to do is open a new layer (the example for this tutorial is size 250x250). Fill your first layer with black, then make a new, blank layer on top of that one. All other steps are done on the second layer, not on the layer filled with black.
Now use your circular marquee tool (hold down your square marquee tool to find it), to select a circle on your top layer.

Now go to Edit &Gt Stroke, using white (or another color if you'd like). The settings I used are pictured (ten pixels), but should depend on the size of the image you're working with.

Go to Edit > Distort > Perspective, and just mess with your circle, to give it some dimension- really some personal trial and error is necessary here.

Duplicate your halo. On your original layer (it should be covered by the top layer), and go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. A setting between 4 - 5 will do the trick. If all you want is the halo, you're all done! However, if you want to surround another image with the halo, continue on.

Merge your two halo layers (Ctrl E). Decide what image you want to put in the middle of the halo (in my case, a rose), and what parts you want covered or uncovered by the halo (which part of your halo will be "in front" of the image). With your polygonal lasso tool, make a selection of the part of the halo you want to cover your image, and cut.

Paste the half back in (it should be it's own layer), realign it, and place your halo-circled object in between the two layers for a finished product.
