Classic Blast Tutorial |
In this tutorial you'll learn how to make the useful "blast" or "explosion" effect used in many graphics and avatars. This is done using Adobe Photoshop 6.0, and a basic understanding of filters and tools is assumed.

The first thing to do is open a new document. For this tutorial I'm using a 250x250 px canvas, but it will adapt to just about any shape or size.
Hit "D" to set your colors on the standard black and white. Then to to Filter > Render > Clouds. You can hit Cntrl F to find the arrangement you like best.
Next to go Filter > Pixelate > Mezzotint, and set it on "Medium Lines," although you can experiment with longer lines if you'd like. |
Now go to Filter > Blur > Radial Blur, set it on "Zoom," on 100%. You may want to repeat this (I used three times here), to get the look that you want. |
Now just hit Cntrl U, set to colorize and make your blast whatever color you want! |
